Choya is the world's largest producer of umeshu (plum wine) and most people outside of Japan know only of Choya because their umeshu is so widely available. Choya Original is their main product and is based on a wine made with white grapes where the unripe ume fruit (ume is not actually the same as a plums we know, but is a plum type with more acidity in it) is added to with sugar. It is no surprise that Choya chose to use white grape wine as a base because they started out in 1914 cultivating grapes and producing wine. It was not until 1951 that they started producing umeshu. Easy to drink, full flavour of the ume with an intense and fruity aroma. Best served on the rocks, a lot of rocks.
